UPDATE: The highly anticipated Lakeville Books & Stationery has officially opened its doors in Great Barrington, MA, today, November 7, 2025. This new location promises to be a haven for book lovers, especially after the recent closure of The Bookloft left a significant void in the community.
Owner Darryl Peck, a veteran of the retail industry with over 54 years of experience, recognized the urgent need for a local bookstore in Great Barrington. Following the struggles of The Bookloft, Peck and his family quickly stepped in to fill the gap, ensuring that residents have access to a vibrant space for reading and discovery.
“We knew Great Barrington needed a local bookstore,” Peck stated. After securing a long-term lease for the previously occupied space, the team undertook a swift renovation, focusing on enhancing the layout and flow of the store. “One of the biggest priorities was improving the flow,” he explained, highlighting his commitment to creating an inviting atmosphere for shoppers.
The Great Barrington location, which features a selection of 20,000 items, opened amidst a flurry of excitement. “On opening day, we arrived to cars in the parking lot waiting for us to turn the sign to ‘Open’,” Peck noted, emphasizing the immediate support from the community.
Peck, alongside his wife Anne Lyndon Peck and daughter Alice, has a history of running successful bookstores, including Righton Books on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Their latest venture not only offers general-interest books, but also a robust collection for children and young adults, as well as an eclectic selection for adults that reflects their personal passions.
This new bookstore features an array of letter-writing supplies, art materials, and unique board games, setting it apart from typical bookstores. Peck acknowledges, “It’s kind of irresistible and sets us apart.”
The community has responded positively to the new store, even in the absence of extensive advertising. Peck noted that signs out front and local ads were enough to draw in a steady stream of customers. “People already have the mindset that supporting local shops is a priority,” he stated, underscoring the importance of independent bookstores in fostering community connections.
Additionally, Lakeville Books & Stationery will offer an LBS Rewards program, allowing customers to earn rewards for their purchases, further encouraging local support.
As the holiday season approaches, Peck plans to host special events to enhance community engagement, although he admits that the focus for now is on managing the busy opening period. “We’ll probably start those after the new year,” he said, hinting at exciting future developments.
The new Lakeville Books & Stationery in Great Barrington is not just a place to buy books; it’s a community hub where readers can explore, discover, and enjoy the joy of reading. With its opening today, the Pecks hope to create lasting connections with the community, ensuring that Great Barrington remains a vibrant destination for bibliophiles.
