Sadiq Khan’s Oxford Street Plan Faces Backlash from Residents

London’s iconic Oxford Street is at the center of a heated debate as Mayor Sadiq Khan unveiled a proposal aimed at transforming it into a pedestrian-only zone. On November 21, 2023, Khan and Transport for London (TfL) revealed plans to ban all vehicles, including cars, buses, taxis, bicycles, pedicabs, and scooters, from a stretch of the high street known for its prominent retail outlets such as Selfridges, John Lewis, and M&S. Emergency services would retain access, but the changes have sparked significant concern among local residents and businesses.

Critics, notably the Marylebone Residents’ Association, have described the plan as “dangerous, unworkable, and catastrophic” for the surrounding neighborhoods. They argue that removing traffic would eliminate natural surveillance, making the area vulnerable to crime, including gang activity, illegal trading, and rough sleeping. The Association has indicated that businesses are already facing escalating incidents of shoplifting, assaults, and anti-social behavior.

The proposed pedestrianisation would affect a section of Oxford Street between the junctions of Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. While TfL aims to ensure that bus stops, taxi ranks, and drop-off points are as close to this pedestrian area as possible, concerns remain regarding accessibility. The Association has warned that older residents and disabled shoppers may experience longer travel times, potentially making Oxford Street a “no-go zone” for these groups.

In response to the backlash, Khan defended the initiative, emphasizing the need for “urgent action” to rejuvenate the nation’s high street. He expressed optimism that a reimagined Oxford Street could not only attract visitors but also showcase the best of London to the world. “I’m pleased that we’re now moving ahead with our exciting plans to regenerate this iconic area, backed by the vast majority of Londoners and businesses,” Khan stated.

The current regulations already restrict general traffic on Oxford Street between 07:00 and 19:00 from Monday to Saturday. A public consultation on the latest proposals is set to conclude on January 16, 2024, allowing residents and stakeholders to voice their opinions on the future of this renowned shopping destination.

As the debate continues, the outcome of the proposed changes remains uncertain, with both sides presenting compelling arguments about the future of Oxford Street.
