BREAKING: A total of 86 international films are officially in contention for the 98th Academy Awards, as submissions for this prestigious event are now open. These feature-length films, produced outside the United States and primarily in non-English languages, are vying for a coveted nomination in a highly competitive landscape.
Academy members from all branches are invited to participate in the preliminary voting process. However, they must meet a minimum viewing requirement to cast their votes. This is an urgent call for film enthusiasts and members to engage with the films that could potentially shape the future of cinema.
In addition, 35 features are competing in the animated feature film category. To qualify for voting, these films must have completed their necessary qualifying releases and adhere strictly to the category’s rules. Animation branch members will have the final say in determining the five nominees, with non-branch Academy members eligible to vote as well, given they meet the viewing criteria.
Moreover, 201 documentary features are also under consideration. Similar to the animated films, these documentaries must comply with release requirements. Notably, those that have either won qualifying film festival awards or have been submitted as their country’s official selection in the international feature film category are also eligible.
Mark your calendars: the shortlist for nominees will be announced on December 16, followed by the official nominations reveal on January 22, 2026. This is a critical moment for filmmakers around the globe, as their hard work and talent may soon gain international recognition.
This year’s awards promise to be a celebration of diverse storytelling and creativity, reflecting the vast array of voices in global cinema. With voting now underway, anticipation is building, and the countdown to the Oscars has officially begun.
