UPDATE: Trainer Dan Skelton has declared that Grey Dawning is ready to settle “unfinished business” as he seeks victory in the prestigious Betfair Chase this Saturday at Haydock Park. The eight-year-old grey is the current favorite at odds of 11-8 for the £200,000 race, set for November 22, 2025, at 3:00 PM.
Grey Dawning, who previously triumphed at Haydock two years ago, is on a mission after finishing second in last year’s Betfair Chase, narrowly losing to Royal Pagaille by just two lengths. The two-time winner of this event is aiming for a hat-trick, with bookmakers offering odds of 4-1 for his third consecutive victory.
Skelton shared his confidence in Grey Dawning’s preparations during a press conference held at Cheltenham Racecourse: “I’m really happy with how he’s training. The forecast looks variable, but we are prepared for any conditions.” He noted that while Royal Pagaille has a strong home advantage, Grey Dawning’s history at Haydock provides a solid foundation for this weekend’s race.
After a mixed season last year, where Grey Dawning finished second at the Betfair Chase but was later pulled up in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase, he rebounded with a victory in the Listed Premier Chase at Kelso. His runner-up finish to Gaelic Warrior at the Randox Grand National Festival in April is also noteworthy, as Patrick Mullins, a respected figure in horse racing, believes Gaelic Warrior may contend for the Gold Cup.
Skelton expressed a sense of determination for Grey Dawning, emphasizing, “It feels like there is a bit of unfinished business for him in the Betfair Chase.” He aims to deliver a win for owners Robert and Lesley Kirkland, stating, “We’ll be going to Haydock with no excuses.”
The Betfair Chase will also feature notable competitors, including Haiti Couleurs, the second favorite at 3-1, who has recently shown impressive form, and the Grade One novice contender Stellar Story, representing Ireland. Other entries include Handstands, Hitman, and Marsh Wren, rounding out a competitive field.
With gates opening at 10:05 AM and the first race starting at 12:08 PM, fans can expect a thrilling day at Haydock Park. Tickets start from £29.70 if booked in advance. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit https://www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/haydock/events-tickets/betfair-chase/.
As anticipation builds for the Betfair Chase, all eyes will be on Grey Dawning as he strives for redemption in a race filled with excitement and high stakes.
