A special meeting of St Issell’s Women’s Institute (WI) took place on November 13, 2023, in Saundersfoot, where members gathered to discuss upcoming events and confirm leadership roles. President Diane Rigden welcomed attendees, starting the evening with the singing of “Jerusalem.”
During the meeting, Diane expressed gratitude to Mary Lawrence and Bev Bennet for providing flowers for the top table. The group celebrated the November birthdays of several members: Sue Haines, Sue Gould, Anne-Marie Littlewood, Liz Talboys, and Mary Cavell. The assembly also offered condolences to Mary Sefton following the recent loss of her husband, noting that a card and flowers had been sent to her.
The meeting highlighted several recent activities, including a walk led by member Madelene on November 10, where six participants managed to avoid the rain. Members confirmed their £10 deposits for the Christmas lunch scheduled for December 4 at Bramleys. Final arrangements were also made for those attending the Annual Meeting in Haverfordwest on Saturday.
Upcoming Festivities and Initiatives
A carol service is set for December 10 at 14:00 at St Issell’s Church. Members were encouraged to volunteer for baking mince pies, with several stepping forward. Bee agreed to serve as the organist, while Val will coordinate with Rev’d Martine Johnson.
The meeting also focused on community projects, as Pam presented wool intended for scarves to be made for the Eisteddfod. Interest was shown in forming a knitting group, with a date to be announced. Anne-Marie committed to creating a scarf by the next meeting.
In an engaging announcement, Bev revealed that a speaker had been arranged for the December meeting, which will feature a buffet in the spirit of the season. Additionally, members are asked to bring five Christmas cards to the next gathering for distribution to local residential homes.
Diane read through the newsletter, noting a lack of interest in WI house windows. Pam also mentioned a trip to Cardiff scheduled for November 20. Discussions on sports and leisure revealed a consensus that more sporting activities are needed within the group.
The competition for a motto for 2026 was won by Jacqui Cowgill, whose phrase read: “If you can’t do it, don’t do it, but if you can do it, then do it.” The meeting concluded with refreshments, followed by the Annual General Meeting, where Diane Rigden’s presidency was officially confirmed for another term.
This gathering exemplified the dedication of St Issell’s WI members to community engagement and festive spirit as they prepare for a busy December ahead.
