Man Transforms Life, Loses Seven Stone Through Football Journey

Riz Khodabux, a 39-year-old man from Bridgend, Wales, lost an impressive seven stone in just 18 months after an embarrassing comment about his size spurred him into action. He realized that his weight was negatively impacting his health and happiness, prompting a significant lifestyle change that not only transformed his physique but also enriched his social life.

The turning point for Riz came when he felt humiliated by a remark made about his weight in front of a group. He recalls, “A person made a comment about my weight in front of loads of people, which really made me feel miserable. It made me look at myself, and I decided a change was needed.” Struggling with breathlessness and persistent back pain, Riz resolved to take control of his health.

Joining the MAN v FAT Football program, designed specifically for men with a BMI over 27.5, became a key element of his transformation. The program incorporates weekly football sessions that combine physical activity with a supportive community atmosphere. Riz admitted he was initially apprehensive about participating, thinking he might not fit in due to his size. “I enjoy football, so I was excited about MAN v FAT. From the first game I played, I knew I made the right decision,” he said.

Through the program, Riz formed strong bonds with teammates who shared similar challenges. “Team spirit, competitiveness, support from teammates who are going through the same challenges and emotions I am. I look forward to every Friday, kitting up and loving the feeling of being a football player in a team,” he explained. This sense of community has significantly impacted his journey, providing both motivation and encouragement.

Riz’s dietary changes played a crucial role in his weight loss. Previously indulging in meals like cheese toasties, processed burgers, and takeaways, he has now adopted a healthier diet. Breakfast consists of three boiled eggs, lunch includes air-fried chicken breast with salad, and dinner features a protein flatbread with salad and mince kofta. He has eliminated snacking, opting for fruit or protein shakes when hungry, and commits to drinking at least two litres of water daily.

The camaraderie within the MAN v FAT Football club has extended beyond personal goals. Riz noted, “The club spirit is amazing; we all come together to raise money for charities or for people who are struggling. It’s amazing how kind and generous we are!” This collective effort fosters a positive environment where members celebrate each other’s successes, both on the pitch and in their weight loss journeys.

Since the beginning of the year, the MAN v FAT club in Bridgend has collectively lost a remarkable 635 kilograms. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of the program in promoting weight loss through community support and physical activity. Players weigh in before participating in 28-minute small-sided games, where teams earn extra goals for overall weight loss.

Riz’s determination has led to a complete turnaround in his life. “I never thought I could do anything like this. I was so big I struggled walking a few steps; now I’m running around a football pitch for 30 minutes!” His goal now is to score a goal for his team, Wrexhamburger, as he continues his journey toward better health.

The MAN v FAT Football sessions take place every Wednesday at 19:00 at Archbishop McGrath RC School, providing a welcoming space for men looking to improve their fitness and overall well-being.
