Naomi Long Calls Attack on Alliance Party HQ “Sinister”

Naomi Long, leader of the Alliance Party and Northern Ireland’s Minister of Justice, has condemned a recent attack on the party’s headquarters in Newtownabbey, describing the act as “sinister.” The incident occurred when graffiti was sprayed on external shutters and a fence of the building located on Farmley Road in Glengormley. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is treating the incident as a sectarian hate crime.

The vandalism was reported on the morning of June 5, 2025, and police believe the attack might have taken place in the days prior. Chief Superintendent Stephen Murray stated, “We have launched a proactive criminal investigation.” He emphasized the commitment of the PSNI to ensure that elected representatives and their staff can perform their duties without facing harassment or intimidation.

Police Investigation Underway

As part of their inquiry, the PSNI has appealed for anyone with information, or those who may possess CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward. Individuals are encouraged to contact the police on 101, quoting reference 453 05/06/25.

In her response, Long asserted that such “reckless acts of intimidation will never deter Alliance from working to deliver for the people of Northern Ireland.” She condemned the actions as an attempt to incite fear and highlighted the broader implications of harmful rhetoric prevalent in public discourse.

“The abhorrent incidents that we’ve seen in recent months directed at politicians and political parties have been utterly unacceptable and are a direct consequence of the harmful rhetoric being spread by individuals both in the chamber and on social media,” Long said. She urged everyone in public life to contribute to reducing the current toxic rhetoric, which she indicated has a tangible impact on community stability and safety.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

Long expressed gratitude to the police for their prompt and professional response, recognizing the importance of their ongoing investigation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by political figures and the detrimental effects of escalating tensions in political discussions.

As the investigation progresses, the Alliance Party remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the people of Northern Ireland, emphasizing resilience in the face of intimidation. The party’s leadership continues to call for unity and a more constructive dialogue in political arenas.
