Drivers may find themselves facing fines of up to £300 if they violate a little-known regulation regarding the transport of fireworks. This rule takes effect on Wednesday, and experts warn that many motorists are unaware of the restrictions tied to carrying fireworks while driving.
Under current regulations, individuals transporting fireworks must adhere to a specific weight limit. Motorists are permitted to carry up to 5 kg of net explosive content (NEC) without requiring a special license. Exceeding this limit, which translates to approximately 50–60 kg of total fireworks, could result in significant penalties. Organisers of larger firework displays should take particular care, as they are more likely to breach this weight threshold.
A spokesperson for Show Plates World highlighted the importance of following safety precautions when transporting fireworks. They noted, “Most people would never dream of intentionally breaking the law, but when it comes to fireworks, the rules are surprisingly strict. If you buy in bulk or collect for friends and family, it’s easy to exceed the legal limit without realising, and that could put your licence, and even your insurance, at risk.”
To comply with the law, fireworks should be stored upright, kept out of direct sunlight, and never placed in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. Instead, they should be secured in the boot, in their original packaging, and away from any electrical items, lighters, or matches.
As November 5 approaches, marking the anniversary of the failed Gunpowder Plot orchestrated by Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby in 1605, many communities will host firework displays. While smaller garden displays are unlikely to trigger these regulations, larger events could lead to fines if organisers are not careful about compliance.
In addition to potential fines, carrying excessive fireworks may jeopardise motorists’ car insurance policies. Claire Wills-McKissick, a spokesperson for Tempcover, emphasised the need for drivers to verify their insurance coverage before transporting fireworks. She stated, “Don’t assume your policy covers you when transporting fireworks—always check your policy or confirm with your insurer beforehand, as coverage can also depend on the amount you’re carrying. Failing to know the rules means you could be driving uninsured without even realising it.”
As Bonfire Night nears, it is crucial for drivers to be informed about these regulations to avoid unexpected fines and ensure their safety on the road. Awareness of the weight limitations and the proper handling of fireworks will help maintain compliance and protect both drivers and their vehicles.
