After Woman’s World, the first single from her new album, debuted at number 47 in the UK and at number 63 in the US, Katy Perry’s comeback has faltered.
The pop star’s return is disappointing; her seventh album, 143, will be released in September.
As well as being destroyed via online entertainment, Lady’s Reality – and its video – have been basically panned, with many inclination its women’s activist informing is distant.
Externally, the Guardian inquired, “What retrograde, warmed-over hell is this?” Rolling Stone raised the query, “Perry is stuck in 2016,” and The Cut stated externally that Is Katy Perry’s comeback single the worst of all time?”
With the catchy chorus “It’s a woman’s world, and you’re lucky to be living in it,” Perry sings about women being sisters, mothers, champions, and winners at the same time.
Perry, dressed as Rosie the Riveter, and other women dancing around a construction site in tiny outfits take the video one step further.
The video includes scenes of the women using urinals and sex toys, as well as Perry being struck by an anvil, which causes her to develop bionic legs.
There’s likewise an appearance from YouTuber Trisha Paytas, hauling a beast truck.
Later, Perry explained in an Instagram external behind-the-scenes video that the video was meant to be “satire,” “slapstick,” and “very on the nose.”
However, the Guardian’s Laura Snapes wrote in her review that Perry was unable to compete with pop stars like Chappell Roan and others at the top of the charts.
“Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli xcx are modeling what it takes to become a pop star in 2024: “Some of the qualities Perry had at the height of her promise but seems to have lost forever are they’re inventive, self-aware, silly, and deep,” she wrote.
Additionally, Perry has come under fire for collaborating with producer Dr. Luke on the single, especially given that the song is about women’s empowerment.
Kesha, a fellow singer, filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke in 2014, claiming that he had “sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused [Kesha] to the point where [she] nearly lost her life.” Her attorneys claimed that he had violated their contract.
Dr. Luke refuted the assertions. Last year, they agreed to settle a defamation lawsuit that had been going on for years.
Kesha, who just released her first track as an independent artist, tweeted “lol” when Katy Perry announced the collaborators for her new album. This was widely interpreted as a jibe at her fellow pop star. Kesha was later depicted wearing the same message-emblazoned vest top.
Perry became the first female artist to have five Billboard Hot 100 singles number one songs from the same album with her 2010 album Teenage Dream.
She has likewise had five number one singles in the UK, however these were fanned out north of 10 years – from 2008’s I Kissed A Young lady through to Feels, her 2017 joint effort with Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams and Large Sean.
Although it received mixed reviews, Perry’s most recent album, Smile, debuted in the top five in the United Kingdom and the United States in 2020. Its lead single Daisies crested at number 37 on the UK outline.
