Moray Libraries Enhance Research Access with New Digital Tools

Moray Council libraries have expanded their research offerings by introducing two significant digital tools for all library members. Users can now access the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, empowering them to delve into historical records and family histories.

The British Newspaper Archive allows library users to explore millions of newspaper articles from across the globe. With a library membership card, members can conduct free searches and gain access to a vast collection of historical newspapers directly from local libraries. This resource offers a unique opportunity to discover historical events and cultural developments through firsthand accounts.

Additionally, the Ancestry Library Edition is designed for those interested in tracing their familial roots. This tool provides access to a variety of UK records, including births, deaths, marriages, military service, and comprehensive census information. Users can also explore parish records and immigration/emigration data, aiding them in piecing together their ancestry.

Access and Availability

Library patrons can utilize public computers at Moray libraries to access these new resources. While these PCs are available for free, it is advisable to book in advance to ensure availability. Alternatively, users can connect to the library’s public Wi-Fi and access the databases on their personal devices, making research more flexible and convenient.

Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new offerings. She stated, “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”

The introduction of these tools marks a significant enhancement in the resources available to Moray’s residents, reflecting the council’s commitment to providing accessible educational materials. As libraries continue to evolve in the digital age, these additions represent a step forward in connecting community members with their history and heritage.

With the launch of the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, Moray Council libraries are set to become invaluable resources for both historical inquiry and personal exploration.
