Moray Council has introduced two significant research tools for library members, enhancing access to historical information and family history resources. The newly available platforms, the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, will empower users to delve into extensive collections of historical data and documents.
The British Newspaper Archive allows library patrons to conduct free searches of millions of newspaper articles from various sources worldwide. With a valid library membership card, users can access this extensive archive at local libraries, enriching their understanding of historical events and societal changes.
In addition to newspaper resources, the Ancestry Library Edition provides invaluable tools for those interested in tracing their family history. This platform includes access to UK records that cover births, deaths, marriages, military service, and more, including UK census records, parish records, and immigration/emigration records. Such comprehensive resources facilitate an in-depth exploration of personal and historical narratives.
Library computers are available for public use, though users are encouraged to book in advance to ensure access. Alternatively, patrons can connect to public Wi-Fi and utilize these resources on their personal devices, enhancing flexibility and accessibility.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new offerings. “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community,” she stated. “Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
The addition of these digital resources reflects Moray Council’s commitment to promoting education and lifelong learning within the community. By integrating advanced research tools into their library services, they aim to foster greater engagement with history and genealogy, catering to a diverse audience of researchers, students, and history enthusiasts alike.
As library membership continues to grow, these enhancements will likely attract more visitors eager to explore the rich tapestry of their heritage and the world around them.
