US Launches Major Airstrike on Iran’s Kharg Island, Trump Claims Victory

The United States has executed a significant airstrike on Iran’s Kharg Island, a strategic location in the northern Persian Gulf. President Donald Trump announced on March 13, 2024, that the US military had “obliterated” all military targets on the island, describing the operation as “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East.”

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump characterized Kharg Island as “Iran’s crown jewel,” emphasizing the attack’s scale and precision. He noted that while every military target was destroyed, the US chose not to target the island’s oil infrastructure for “reasons of decency.” This decision highlights the delicate balance of military action and economic considerations in the region.

Kharg Island, measuring approximately five miles long and two and a half miles wide, serves as the primary terminal for Iran’s oil exports. Until this airstrike, it had remained untouched by US and Israeli military operations, making this raid particularly notable.

In his statement, Trump declared, “Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.” He further asserted that the US possesses some of the most advanced military capabilities globally, claiming, “Iran has NO ability to defend anything that we want to attack.”

The President also issued a warning regarding the security of maritime navigation in the region. He stated, “should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.” This remark underscores the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply is transported.

Trump’s comments come amidst ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, particularly regarding nuclear capabilities. He emphasized, “Iran will NEVER have a nuclear weapon, nor will it have the ability to threaten the United States of America, the Middle East or, for that matter, the World!” He urged Iran and its allies to “lay down their arms” to preserve what remains of their country.

Earlier on the same day, Trump addressed the airstrike during an interview with Fox News, where he suggested that capturing Kharg Island was not a priority. He questioned the logic behind such inquiries, stating, “Who’d ask a question like that, and what fool would answer it?” This interaction reflects the unpredictable nature of Trump’s communication style and his approach to military strategy.

As the situation continues to evolve, the implications of this airstrike on US-Iran relations and regional stability remain to be seen. The international community will closely monitor both military developments and diplomatic responses in the days ahead, as this incident adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile geopolitical landscape.
