Security measures in Windsor are being significantly intensified as preparations are made for the visit of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to Windsor Castle on March 18-19, 2024. The event, hosted by King Charles III, will see heightened security protocols, including extensive airspace restrictions.
Thames Valley Police have confirmed that a temporary expansion of the existing airspace exclusion zone around Windsor Castle will be implemented on March 18. The restrictions will be in effect from 07:00 to 23:59 GMT. Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall, who leads the police’s joint operations unit, emphasized that these air restrictions are just one component of a comprehensive security operation. He stated, “Many measures will be visible, others will not. Anyone breaching the restrictions commits a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could be arrested.”
Comprehensive Security Measures in Place
In addition to airspace restrictions, officers with specialist capabilities will patrol the town. This includes armed units, mounted police, search teams, and roads policing units. Neighbourhood officers will conduct unpredictable patrols to deter any potential criminal activity. The event will also see the deployment of CCTV surveillance and hostile vehicle mitigation barriers to enhance safety.
“Significant planning has gone into this state visit. We will ensure the safety of dignitaries, spectators, and the public during this historic occasion,” Hall added. The police force is taking proactive steps to ensure a secure environment for all attendees.
Road closures and parking restrictions will begin on March 17, with some footways and crossings in the town centre intermittently closed to facilitate a ceremonial procession. Thames Valley Police have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant during this period, reporting any suspicious activity via 101, or in emergencies, by calling 999.
As Windsor prepares for this high-profile visit, the coordinated efforts by law enforcement underscore the importance of maintaining safety and security for both the dignitaries and the public. The visit by President Tinubu marks a significant diplomatic engagement, further strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
