Young Briton Builds £20 Million Business in Thailand After Leaving UK

Andrew Stocks made a life-changing decision at the age of 18 when he left the UK for Thailand, transforming a modest savings of £300,000 into a thriving business valued at over £20 million. Originally from Devon, Stocks had dreamed of escaping the life in Britain since childhood, and his journey has since led him to establish a successful retirement resort catering to expats.

Arriving in Thailand without prior experience or even a visit to the country, Stocks faced immediate financial challenges. He recalls, “When I first arrived in Thailand, I noticed my money started to go down quickly.” Despite the initial difficulties, he maintained an optimistic outlook, believing that opportunities would arise as he adapted to his new environment.

Stocks’ journey to wealth began long before he set foot in Thailand. He worked at his parents’ caravan business, Brixham Holiday Park, where he accumulated savings. Introduced to the buy-to-let property market as a teenager, he secured a loan from a friend to make his first investment. Initially, properties were purchased in his parents’ names but were transferred to him upon turning 18. Over time, he acquired a total of five rental properties, selling them for profit.

Motivated by his entrepreneurial spirit and the skills he gained from his family’s business, Stocks relocated to Thailand with the intention of establishing his own hospitality venture. He began by volunteering for a local charity, where he met a developer who shared his vision. This connection proved pivotal, leading to the creation of Sunshine International Retirement Residences, Resorts & Spas.

Building a Resort Empire

Stocks quickly fell in love with Thailand’s warm climate and the welcoming attitude towards business. His company now operates six resorts and hotels, all boasting at least a four-star rating. The largest hotel features 250 rooms, private pool villas, and lush tropical gardens designed for the comfort of retirees.

Today, Stocks’ net worth is estimated at over £20 million, a result of what he describes as “years of hard graft.” He attributes his success not only to careful financial planning but also to the growing trend of British retirees seeking a more affordable lifestyle in countries like Thailand, where they can enjoy quality healthcare and a vibrant lifestyle without the high costs associated with traditional retirement destinations such as Spain and France.

“I believe more Brits should come here,” he states. “It provides a lifestyle you can only dream of. I believe it was my calling to bring retired people to Thailand.” Despite his wealth, Stocks emphasizes that he does not feel affluent, as his financial resources are largely tied up in property investments. He continues to reinvest profits back into his company.

Reflecting on his decision to leave the UK, Stocks expresses satisfaction with his choice. “It was too expensive then, and it’s much more expensive now,” he notes. Although he retains pride in his British heritage, he is grateful for having escaped what he describes as a “rat race” that he believes would have stifled his potential.

Andrew Stocks’ story serves as an inspiring example of how determined individuals can find success beyond their homeland. His experience highlights the growing appeal of retirement in emerging markets, where lifestyle, cost of living, and opportunities for investment converge to create a promising future for expats.
