Flamengo Parts Ways with Coach Filipe Luís After 8-0 Victory

Flamengo has announced the departure of coach Filipe Luís following an impressive 8-0 victory against Madureira on Monday. Despite this commanding win, which secured Flamengo’s place in the final of the Carioca Championship with an aggregate score of 11-0, the club is experiencing its worst start to a season in a decade.

The decision to part ways with Luís comes on the heels of a disappointing campaign thus far. Flamengo lost the Brazilian Super Cup title to Corinthians and faced elimination against Lanús in the South American Recopa. Currently, the team sits in 11th place in the league standings, accumulating just four points from their first three matches.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, Flamengo declared, “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team.” The statement also mentioned that assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares will also be leaving the club. The organization expressed gratitude to Luís for his contributions, stating, “The club wishes him success and good luck in the continuation of his professional career.”

Filipe Luís, who began his tenure at Flamengo as a player in 2019, helped the club secure an impressive total of ten trophies, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores. Transitioning to a coaching role in 2024, he achieved 64 wins in 101 matches, with only 15 losses, showcasing a strong performance.

At just 40 years old, Luís had recently garnered interest from various European clubs after guiding Flamengo to significant victories, including the Brazilian Serie A title, the Copa Libertadores, the Campeonato Carioca, and the Brazil Supercopa in 2025. Despite this interest, he opted to extend his contract with Flamengo for an additional two years in December.

As Flamengo embarks on the search for a new head coach, speculation arises around the potential appointment of Jardim, who has been without a managerial position since departing Cruzeiro in December. The club’s leadership will undoubtedly aim to reverse the current trend and restore the team to its former glory in the coming matches.
