World-renowned Aardman Animations has garnered significant recognition from Ofsted, the UK’s education regulator, for its adult training courses in stop-motion animation. The Bristol-based studio, famous for its innovative animation techniques, initiated its adult training program in October 2024 and has since made a notable impact in the creative industry.
Positive Progress Report from Ofsted
The Ofsted report was published on February 26, 2026, following a two-day inspection in January. This monitoring review assessed Aardman’s early developments in leadership and governance, curriculum, teaching and training, and safeguarding arrangements, laying the groundwork for a future comprehensive inspection.
According to the report, Aardman achieved significant progress in the first three areas and reasonable progress in safeguarding. Inspectors highlighted that leadership and governance have rapidly evolved, positively influencing learners and apprentices. The report noted: “Progress has been rapid and is already having considerable beneficial impact on learners and/or apprentices.”
Aardman’s leadership team is working to establish ambitious Skills Bootcamps aimed at training high-quality stop-motion animators for feature film productions. The studio collaborates with local economic development organizations to create pathways for learners to advance from junior roles to senior positions in animation.
Inclusive and Supportive Learning Environment
The report commended Aardman for fostering a culture of high professional standards. Learners are taught by experienced professional animators in state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring they acquire the skills necessary to meet the rigorous technical and creative demands of the industry. Course leaders rigorously assess training quality, preparing students thoroughly for workplace challenges.
Career support extends beyond course completion, with Aardman providing extensive guidance on showreels and job applications. The inspection noted, “Leaders provide excellent and sustained career support to learners beyond the completion of their course.”
Aardman’s training environment is welcoming and inclusive, accommodating various learner needs. Adjustments are made to course timings to assist those with family responsibilities, and additional study time is offered to students with dyslexia. Financial bursaries are available for under-represented groups, enabling them to attend preparatory animation classes essential for applying to Skills Bootcamps.
The report stated, “Learners gain highly specialised skills which prepare them comprehensively for immediate employment on feature productions.” Participants quickly master essential techniques, such as animating character puppets and synchronizing their movements with audio dialogue. Tutors effectively demonstrate complex stop-motion methods, allowing learners to practice until they achieve confidence and independence in their skills.
Real production case studies are incorporated into lessons, helping students connect animation theories with practical applications. The feedback delivered by tutors is precise and ambitious, encouraging learners to meet broadcast-quality standards while fostering an environment where creativity can flourish.
During the inspection, six adults, aged 19 and over, were participating in a senior animator course, showcasing the program’s reach and impact.
