URGENT UPDATE: A dangerous driver, Erjon Aliaj, has been sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for the tragic death of Baljit Kaur, a beloved mother, who was struck and killed in Smethwick. The incident occurred on August 28, 2022, when Aliaj was driving a borrowed Mercedes at speeds reaching 88 mph on Thimblemill Road.
Witnesses described Aliaj’s reckless driving, noting he sped through nearby Bearwood before losing control of the vehicle just as Kaur was being dropped off at home by her colleague, Manveer Kaur, around 9:25 PM. The collision involved five vehicles in total, resulting in catastrophic injuries for Kaur, who tragically died at the scene.
During the sentencing, Judge Michael Chambers KC highlighted the severity of Aliaj’s actions. “You clearly lost control of your vehicle due to the speed at which you were travelling,” he stated. “Her injuries were so extensive that she died at the scene.”
Authorities confirmed that Aliaj was more than twice over the legal drink-drive limit, with a breath test revealing 69 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. Additionally, police found three wraps of cocaine on him, consistent with use 24 hours prior to the crash.
Witness accounts painted a grim picture of the night, with a passenger in Aliaj’s car describing the vehicle speeding past them like a “missile” just before the tragedy unfolded. Despite pleas to slow down, Aliaj ignored the warnings, which ultimately led to devastating consequences.
In court, defense attorney Bal Singh argued that Aliaj was a hardworking individual facing personal difficulties at the time, attributing his reckless behavior to a recent relationship breakdown. However, the judge emphasized the gravity of the crime, imposing a 13-year extended road ban upon Aliaj, along with a mandatory extended driving test upon release.
The court has also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the cocaine found on Aliaj post-collision. Aliaj, who has been in the UK since 2009, pleaded guilty to causing Kaur’s death by dangerous driving earlier in the proceedings.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating impact it can have on families and communities. As friends and family mourn the loss of a “loving angel,” the community is left to grapple with the consequences of this preventable tragedy.
WHAT’S NEXT: As Aliaj begins his sentence, the focus shifts to raising awareness about road safety and the consequences of impaired driving. Community leaders and advocates may seek to implement new initiatives to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing responsible driving practices.
