UPDATE: A Liverpool father, Joel Richards, living in Doha, has described harrowing moments as his family sought refuge amid missile threats aimed at the US air base in Al-Udeid. The Qatar Defense Ministry confirmed today, February 28, 2024, that several missiles were intercepted, escalating fears in the region.
This alarming situation follows a pre-emptive strike by US and Israeli forces against Iran, which has sparked retaliatory missile launches from Iran targeting Israel and neighboring countries. Joel, 34, expressed his deep concern for his ten-month-old daughter and wife as they sheltered in their hallway to avoid potential danger from shaking windows and doors.
“We heard loud bangs, and our apartment shook,” Joel told the ECHO. “We instinctively took our baby and sheltered in the hallway where it felt safer.”
The situation escalated rapidly. By 8:00 AM local time, the British Embassy issued a warning on social media about heightened regional tensions, advising nationals to remain vigilant. Shortly thereafter, the US Embassy advised its citizens to stay indoors as the conflict intensified. Joel noted that the Irish Embassy followed suit, urging its citizens to seek shelter.
“We were told to stay indoors until further notice around 11:00 AM local time,” Joel recounted. “It’s been ongoing for about five hours now, and we still await news on when it will be safe to go outside.”
This is not Joel’s first encounter with conflict in the region. In September 2023, a strike targeting Hamas leaders in Doha left him rattled but, he says, this situation feels more prolonged and uncertain. “Last time, it was a quick strike, but now we are in a state of limbo,” he remarked.
Despite the chaos, Joel highlighted the supportive network among the expatriate community in Doha. “We’ve been checking in with fellow Scousers to ensure everyone’s okay. We’re in this together,” he shared.
As the day wore on, Joel and his family maintained contact with family back in the UK. “Initially, we weren’t sure how much coverage this was getting at home, but as news spread, we wanted to reassure our loved ones that we’re safe,” he added.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and residents are urged to follow official guidelines as the region remains on high alert. Joel’s experience underscores not just the immediate dangers but also the emotional toll such events have on families far from home.
As the situation develops, residents in Doha and the wider region are advised to stay tuned to official communications for updates on safety protocols and emergency response measures. This is an evolving situation that requires vigilance and preparedness.
