Cramlington Councillor Shaun Knowles Resigns Amid Health Struggles

Councillor Shaun Knowles has announced his resignation from the Northumberland County Council following a diagnosis of kidney cancer. Representing the Cramlington South West ward, Knowles cited ongoing health issues as a significant factor in his decision, effective from February 27, 2024. His departure will prompt a by-election to fill the vacant seat.

In a heartfelt statement, Knowles reflected on the challenges he has faced since his diagnosis. “I have taken the difficult decision to step down as a councillor due to ongoing health issues following a kidney cancer diagnosis, alongside continuing physiotherapy,” he explained. This period has been further complicated by personal loss, as he recently experienced the passing of his father-in-law. He emphasized the need to support his wife during her hospital stay, stating that balancing these responsibilities with his role as a councillor had become increasingly difficult.

Knowles, who was first elected in May 2023, had secured his position by winning 39.4% of the vote in a newly established seat, surpassing Labour and Conservative candidates. His resignation marks a significant shift for the Reform UK party, which has emerged as the second-largest group on the council following the elections.

“I remain fully supportive of Reform UK, both nationally and locally, and will continue as a member of the party,” Knowles affirmed. He also expressed gratitude to his constituents in Cramlington South West for their support during his tenure.

The party leader of Reform Northumberland, Mark Peart, was acknowledged for his support throughout Knowles’ health struggles. As the political landscape evolves, the upcoming by-election will be a pivotal moment for both the local community and the Reform UK party.

Nationally, Reform UK maintains a competitive stance in the political arena, currently polling at 28.6% according to the Britain Elects Poll tracker, leading over Labour at 19% and the Conservatives at 18.7%. As the situation develops, the party’s future direction and the outcome of the upcoming by-election will be closely monitored by constituents and political analysts alike.
