Frustration erupted among Torquay United supporters following an unexpected change in travel arrangements after their team suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Eastbourne Borough on October 21, 2023. Fans were dismayed to learn they were required to swap coaches with the players for the lengthy return trip home to Devon, exacerbating an already disappointing day.
The Torquay United Travel Club voiced their dissatisfaction, stating, “Sadly we are on our way home after a terrible trip, shocking performance and now have had to swap coaches.” They expressed disappointment with the club’s handling of the travel logistics, adding, “So poor on Torquay United, do hope club and players enjoy our coach!” The travel club acknowledged the hard work of the drivers but lamented the long journey back without any points earned.
Torquay United provided clarification regarding the situation. According to the club, discussions were held with the Torquay United Supporters’ Trust (TUST) before the match to address concerns about travel arrangements. The team had traveled to Sussex on Friday, but due to significant vehicle breakdowns, their official transport provider, Roselyn Coaches, had to arrange a temporary replacement vehicle to ensure the squad arrived at their hotel on time.
Roselyn Coaches later informed the club that the replacement vehicle designated for the players’ return journey was the same coach used by supporters for the outbound trip. This led to confusion as the travel arrangements were altered without prior knowledge of the supporters’ travel club. The club emphasized that they did not instruct any supporters to disembark from their coach and that the players had not been aware of these logistical discussions.
Michael Westcott, co-chairman of Torquay United, acknowledged the heightened emotions following the defeat. He expressed regret for the disruption and confusion caused, stating, “We recognise emotions are running high after a disappointing result, and we are sorry for any disruption and confusion caused.” He also thanked the fans for their unwavering support, emphasizing their importance to the team.
Despite the setback on the field and the travel controversy, Torquay United remains positioned second in the National League South, trailing leaders Dorking Wanderers by six points. The club will be looking to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next match, hoping to restore both team morale and fan satisfaction.
