Stratford’s Thomas Jolyffe Primary School Halves Reception Places

Thomas Jolyffe Primary School in Stratford has announced a significant reduction in its annual pupil intake for the reception class, cutting the number from 60 to 30 starting in September 2027. The decision results from a notable decrease in demand for school places, prompting both the school and Warwickshire County Council to take action to ensure the institution’s financial sustainability.

A spokesperson for Warwickshire County Council (WCC) explained that while construction projects in the area are underway, current forecasts indicate a growing surplus of places in primary schools, peaking in 2028. The spokesperson stated, “Although some building work is taking place in the area, the current forecast suggests an increase in surplus places over the next few years.”

The spokesperson further elaborated on the implications of maintaining surplus capacity within planning areas, emphasizing the challenge it poses for schools. When pupil numbers exceed the infant class size limit of 30 children per qualified teacher, schools face the prospect of either operating mixed-age classes or funding an additional teacher for a small group. This situation can strain budgets significantly.

By reducing the reception intake to 30 pupils, Thomas Jolyffe Primary School aims to establish a more stable and sustainable financial position. This change aligns with WCC’s approval of updated school admission arrangements for the academic year 2027/2028.

Impact on Other Schools in Stratford

The reduction in admission numbers at Thomas Jolyffe Primary School is not the only change affecting education in the Stratford district. Additional revisions to priority areas, often referred to as catchment areas, will also take effect for several local schools, including Lighthorne Heath Primary School, Shottery St Andrew’s Primary School, and Bishopton Primary School.

Both Shottery St Andrew’s and Lighthorne Heath Primary Schools are relocating due to new building developments. The current priority areas for these schools do not cover the sites of the new facilities or the housing developments they are intended to serve. The proposed changes will expand Shottery St Andrew’s priority area into regions currently served solely by Holy Trinity CE Primary School, allowing children from new developments priority access to both schools.

Similarly, Bishopton Primary School’s priority area will also be expanded, offering children in the newly designated area priority within the oversubscription criteria for both Bishopton and Holy Trinity CE Primary Schools.

These proposed changes underwent consultation between November 2025 and January 2026, reflecting the council’s commitment to adapting educational planning to meet the evolving needs of the community.

In summary, the decision to halve the reception intake at Thomas Jolyffe Primary School, alongside changes in priority areas for other local schools, highlights the ongoing adjustments being made within the educational landscape of Stratford. This strategic approach aims to respond to demographic shifts while ensuring that schools can operate efficiently and sustainably.
