Thousands of visitors flocked to Mount Vernon on Presidents’ Day, enjoying free admission and a variety of historical presentations on February 19, 2024. The event allowed attendees to pay their respects at George Washington’s Tomb while experiencing Revolutionary War encampments and fife-and-drum performances. Organizers highlighted hands-on activities, including textile demonstrations and discovery stations, aimed at engaging families in the estate’s rich history.
Throughout the day, living-history presentations brought the past to life. The U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as The Old Guard, participated in military demonstrations along with the Caisson Detachment, adding a ceremonial touch to the proceedings. Visitors also had the opportunity to tour the George Washington Presidential Library, where they encountered original documents that illuminate Washington’s life and leadership.
New Exhibition Showcases Washington’s Original Clothing
A new exhibition served as the centerpiece of the celebration, featuring three original clothing items worn by Washington: a coat, waistcoat, and breeches. This marked the first time these garments, which include colors representing red, white, and blue, were displayed together. Anne Neal Petri, regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “We also gather this year to celebrate 250 years of independence,” linking the celebration to upcoming national anniversaries.
The Mount Vernon President and CEO, Doug Bradburn, addressed visitors, explaining the event’s aim to connect people with principles of leadership and the rule of law. He noted Washington’s decision to step away from power, stating, “He stepped away, demonstrating that in America, leaders return to private life and power yields to the rule of law.”
Lindsay Chervinsky, executive director of the library, described the access to historical documents as a unique experience. “To see George Washington’s own letters, documents, and papers up close is a rare and powerful experience,” she said.
Anticipation Grows for the February 22 Celebration
The turnout on Presidents’ Day has heightened anticipation for Mount Vernon’s upcoming birthday celebration on February 22, 2024. This event will include a naturalization ceremony, live music performed by the Air Force String Quartet, story time, discovery stations, and a hoecake demonstration featuring General Washington. Additionally, attendees can look forward to a wreath-laying ceremony at Washington’s tomb, along with a presentation by Tobias Lear.
Mount Vernon is framing its events as part of a broader initiative called “America’s 250,” which aims to engage the public in commemorating the upcoming anniversary of American independence. The estate also introduced the Virginia 250 Passport, a travel guide that highlights over 70 historic sites across the state, encouraging exploration of the region’s rich heritage.
The Presidents’ Day celebration at Mount Vernon successfully marked the beginning of a busy month leading up to the significant events scheduled for February 22, reinforcing the estate’s role as a vital center for American history and education.
