Drivers Prepare for Snow and Ice This Weekend Across the UK

Drivers in the UK are advised to prepare for hazardous winter conditions this weekend, as the Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice set to last until February 15. Most regions will experience adverse weather, with only parts of Kent and Suffolk expected to remain unaffected.

Heavy snowfall is anticipated to disrupt travel, particularly in higher elevations, with the most severe conditions expected on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths are likely to develop icy patches, creating treacherous driving conditions. By Sunday, the weather warnings will shift focus to northern England and Scotland, remaining in place until 10:00 on Sunday morning.

In light of these conditions, drivers are urged to carry a basic winter car kit to ensure safety in the event of becoming stranded or delayed. The RAC recommends including an empty fuel can in this kit, which allows drivers to safely transport fuel from a petrol station if they run out. Carrying a full fuel can is discouraged due to the risk of hazardous fumes.

According to the RAC, “In an ideal world you would plan your journey to include fuel stops, but sometimes things don’t go to plan. If you find yourself without fuel, it’s essential to have an empty fuel can available.” Other essential items to consider include food, warm clothing, and a phone charger, enabling drivers to stay warm and call for assistance if needed.

Additionally, the RAC suggests that drivers consider having a set of snow socks, which are high-grip fabric covers that fit over the car’s driven wheels. This can enhance traction in snowy conditions, providing an extra layer of safety.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Rebekah Hicks emphasized the importance of monitoring the weather forecast. She indicated that as the weather front moves east across the country on Sunday, snowfall is expected to gradually turn to rain. “The rain may be heavy at times, and it will be windy in coastal areas. Additional warnings may be required,” she noted.

As the UK braces for potentially disruptive winter weather, taking precautions now may help ensure safer travel for all drivers during this challenging period.
