In a significant recognition for young talent, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has included David Mirković in its list of 20 promising European players under the age of 20. This marks the third consecutive year FIBA has highlighted emerging players who are making a substantial impact in international clubs, college programs, and NBA teams.
Mirković, a basketball player from Montenegro, is currently a member of the Illinois team, having joined in the summer of last year. In his debut season in the NCAA, he has been making waves with an average of 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. His shooting accuracy is impressive, boasting a field goal percentage of 47 percent and a three-point shooting percentage of 38.3 percent.
In his most recent game, Mirković scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds during a narrow loss to Wisconsin, which ended in overtime with a score of 92-90. According to the FIBA announcement, the selection process considered players’ career achievements, current influence, and long-term potential. The only criterion for inclusion is that players must have been born in 2006 or later, and the list is presented alphabetically rather than ranked.
Outstanding Performance and Potential
Mirković signed with Illinois in preparation for the 2025/26 season, following two full seasons in the ABA League. His experience in the ABA has proven beneficial, as he has quickly begun to contribute to his team’s success in the NCAA. FIBA highlights that Mirković’s greatest strengths lie in his combination of height, agility, and shooting skills from various positions on the court.
Standing at 205 centimeters, Mirković is capable of making difficult shots after dribbling, as well as finishing challenging plays through contact in the paint. His height allows him to dominate in rebounding situations, and he has displayed a keen vision for playmaking from the post. With this unique combination of size, versatile shooting ability, and productivity as a rebounder, it is clear why Mirković is on the radar of NBA scouts and is expected to become a cornerstone of the Montenegrin national team in the foreseeable future.
FIBA’s recognition of young talents like Mirković underscores the growing pool of skilled players emerging from Europe, further solidifying the continent’s reputation as a breeding ground for future basketball stars.
