Armed Robbers Execute Dramatic Heist on Italian Highway

A group of armed robbers executed a dramatic raid on an armoured van on State Road 613 in Puglia, Italy, on March 11, 2024. The incident unfolded when the gang, dressed in matching white overalls and armed with assault rifles, used a burning lorry to block the highway, halting the van’s progress.

The robbers, believed to hail from the Foggia area, employed a blue Alfa Romeo equipped with flashing lights to mislead the security personnel into thinking they were there to provide an escort. After stopping the armoured vehicle, the gang placed an explosive device on its rear and detonated it in an attempt to access the valuable cargo inside.

As the chaos erupted, police arrived at the scene, leading to a shootout that was captured by motorists. Gunfire struck a police car, highlighting the dangerous situation. Officers managed to repel the attackers and protect the van, which belonged to the security firm Battistolli, known for transporting luxury watches. Remarkably, no injuries were reported during the incident.

Police Pursuit and Arrests

Following the raid, detectives pursued the gang, who hijacked vehicles from passing motorists to facilitate their escape. The high-speed chase led investigators to the abandoned Alfa Romeo in the countryside, where law enforcement arrested one suspect attempting to flee on foot. Another gang member was also apprehended in the area.

The raid has drawn significant attention from local authorities. Nicola Magno, the Puglia regional secretary general of Un Arma, expressed serious concerns regarding the risks faced by police officers. He stated, “Once again, the Carabinieri found themselves on the front lines of an extremely violent and organised criminal act. The fact that a patrol was hit by gunfire demonstrates the high level of risk to which our officers are exposed on a daily basis.”

Call for Enhanced Security Measures

Magno emphasized the need for greater support and resources for law enforcement, urging authorities to invest in training and security measures to adapt to the increasingly aggressive and militarised criminal landscape. The local policing union echoed these sentiments, asserting that the safety of citizens relies heavily on the protection of the Carabinieri.

“We cannot wait for injuries or victims to intervene,” the union stated. “We need immediate, structured, and lasting responses to protect those who wear the uniform every day.”

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organised crime in Italy.
