Foreign Direct Investment in Montenegro Reaches €789.61 Million in 2023

The latest data from the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG) reveals that foreign direct investments (FDI) in Montenegro totaled €789.61 million during the first ten months of 2023. However, outflows from the country reached €373.87 million, leading to a net inflow of €415.74 million, which is an increase of 0.77 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

The CBCG’s bulletin highlighted that the total FDI inflow has increased by 7.01 percent compared to the previous year. This growth reflects a steady interest in Montenegro as an investment destination, despite the significant outflows.

Breakdown of Investment Sources

Out of the total outflow, €95.12 million resulted from investments made by residents in foreign markets. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of funds by non-residents, who had invested in Montenegro, accounted for €278.75 million.

In terms of ownership investments, the FDI inflow amounted to €503.01 million, representing 63.7 percent of the total investments. Notably, investments in real estate were substantial, totaling €405.91 million, while investments in businesses and banks reached €97.1 million.

Intercompany Loans and Other Investments

The report also indicated that FDI in the form of intercompany loans reached €254.18 million, marking an increase of 5.01 percent compared to the same period in 2024. The remaining 4.11 percent of the total investments was attributed to other forms of investments, including withdrawals from foreign investments.

Overall, the figures provide insight into the investment climate in Montenegro, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges facing the economy.
