Celebrating Success: Pembrokeshire’s Cysylltu Natur 25×25 Project

A recent event celebrated the significant achievements of the Cysylltu Natur 25×25 project, organized by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. This initiative focused on nature restoration efforts across North Pembrokeshire and brought together volunteers, farmers, and park staff. The ceremony took place on January 24, 2024, in Cwm Gwaun, highlighting the collaborative efforts made to enhance local ecosystems.

The project received funding from the Welsh Government through its Nature Networks Programme, managed by the Heritage Fund. The primary goal of this programme is to bolster ecological connectivity and resilience by restoring habitats across a broad landscape. During the celebration, participants learned about the diverse conservation activities undertaken as part of this initiative.

Efforts included restoring grazing on Rhos pasture to support the habitats of the marsh fritillary butterfly and southern damselfly. Specialists also worked on conserving rare lichens and monitored various species, including choughs, dormice, and harvest mice. Additionally, the project focused on protecting hibernation sites for greater horseshoe bats and addressing the threat posed by invasive species to key sites.

The success of the Cysylltu Natur 25×25 project owes much to the invaluable contributions of volunteers, farmers, land managers, and contractors. Their local knowledge, practical skills, and long-term commitment have been essential in caring for Pembrokeshire’s unique landscapes and wildlife.

Mary Chadwick, Conservation Officer for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, remarked, “Cysylltu Natur 25×25 has shown what can be achieved when farmers, volunteers, and conservation specialists work together with a shared aim. From monitoring some of our most elusive species to restoring and protecting habitats, the dedication of everyone involved has made a real difference for nature across the National Park.”

Although the Cysylltu Natur 25×25 project is concluding, the vital work it supported will continue. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority plans to build on its successes through the next phase of nature recovery work under the NNF4 Cysylltiadau Naturiol/Naturally Connected initiative. This will ensure ongoing protection and enhancement of vital habitats for future generations.

The culmination of such collaborative efforts not only showcases the commitment to environmental stewardship in Pembrokeshire but also sets a precedent for future projects aimed at ecological restoration and sustainability.
