M&M’s Recalled in 20 States Over Hidden Allergen Risks

A recall has been initiated for over 6,000 bags of M&M’s due to a significant labeling error that poses serious health risks to individuals with food allergies. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that the repackaged candies, which contain allergens such as milk, soy, and peanuts, failed to provide required warnings on their packaging. This oversight could potentially expose millions to severe allergic reactions.

The affected products include 1.3-ounce bags of both Peanut M&M’s and classic M&M’s, which were distributed in custom packaging for various companies and events. These promotional items were sold across 20 states, including California, Texas, Florida, and New York.

Identification of the recalled Peanut M&M’s can be made through the ‘Make Your Mark’ label, which features the lot code M1823200 and a ‘best by’ date of April 30, 2026. Classic M&M’s in the recall can be recognized by a range of promotional labels, such as those from Subaru, Morgan Stanley, and Adobe, along with specific lot codes and dates detailed in the official recall announcement.

Following the recall process initiated by Beacon Promotions Inc on January 26, the FDA classified the recall as Class II on February 4. This classification indicates that while the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, the likelihood of serious harm is considered remote.

Food allergies, particularly to peanuts, soy, and milk, affect millions of Americans. Approximately six million individuals are allergic to peanuts, about 1.9 million to soy, and nearly six million to milk. Consuming these allergens can trigger severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can manifest within minutes and may include symptoms such as hives, swelling, and difficulty breathing.

Individuals who possess allergies or sensitivities to these ingredients are strongly advised not to consume the recalled products. The FDA recommends discarding any affected candies immediately to prevent potential health risks.

Beacon Promotions Inc, based in Minnesota, specializes in creating customized promotional items for businesses, including branded chocolate products. The firm has provided promotional M&M’s packages for a variety of entities, including corporations and educational institutions.

The distribution of the recalled products extended to a wide range of states, including Alabama, Arizona, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

For those with food allergies, even trace exposure to allergens can be life-threatening. It is essential to remain vigilant and check for allergen warnings on food products, especially those from promotional sources that may not follow standard retail packaging regulations. If you have received a promotional bag of M&M’s in the affected states, it is crucial to verify the labels and lot codes immediately. If they match the recall, dispose of them safely to avoid health risks.
