Legal Action Initiated Against Podgorica Man for Threats to Politician

The Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica has filed a request with the Court for Misdemeanours regarding Đ.Č., a resident of Podgorica. This action follows suspicions that on January 26, 2026, at approximately 18:30, he posted derogatory remarks on the social media platform Facebook. The comments were made under a post by the news outlet Antena M, targeting Ivan Vuković, a member of the parliament.

According to the Podgorica prosecutor’s office, the statements made by Đ.Č. were deemed to have disrupted public order and peace. Vuković, who is affiliated with the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), had recently called for police intervention following threats directed at him on social media.

In a response to the situation, Vuković expressed his view on social platforms, stating that insults like “nothing goods” and “thief” are part of the political landscape. He emphasized that such comments should be expected, especially in light of his recent acknowledgment of progress in negotiations with the European Union. Vuković further added, “I’m not quite sure about being ‘fit for the trunk’,” indicating his discontent with the hostile remarks.

The case reflects ongoing tensions in the political discourse in Montenegro, where social media platforms have become a battleground for political rivalry. As authorities take action against perceived threats, the implications for political communication and public discourse remain significant.

The prosecution’s request highlights the legal measures being pursued in response to threats against public officials. This incident underscores the need for a balanced approach in political discussions, particularly in the digital age, where words can incite serious consequences.

As the case develops, it will be monitored closely by both political analysts and the public, who are keen to understand the implications for political engagement and freedom of expression in Montenegro.
