EU Invests €25 Million in Quantum Technology Initiative SUPREME

The European Union has announced a significant investment of €25 million to support the launch of the SUPREME project, aimed at advancing superconducting quantum technology. This initiative seeks to industrialize cutting-edge quantum technologies, making them accessible for both industry and academia. The first phase of the project is set to commence in early 2026 and will last for three and a half years.

One of the key milestones for SUPREME will be the fabrication and demonstration of a 3D-integrated qubit module featuring 200 qubits. This development is expected to showcase enhanced stability, higher yield, and improved reproducibility in the critical fabrication processes for superconducting quantum chips. The project will focus on several quantum processes, including angle-evaporated junctions, etched junctions, and hybrid techniques, which will have applications in quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communication.

Advancing Quantum Technology for Industry

The primary objective of SUPREME is to achieve a technology readiness level of TRL 6 and a manufacturing readiness level of MRL 6. These benchmarks are crucial for ensuring that the technologies developed under this initiative can be effectively transitioned into practical applications. To facilitate this, SUPREME will offer piloting services that allow companies to access its fabrication processes.

Through the provision of process design kits (PDKs), pilot runs, and shared wafer runs, SUPREME aims to empower businesses to design and develop their own quantum devices and systems. This collaborative approach is expected to enhance the innovation landscape within the quantum technology sector.

The consortium behind SUPREME comprises multiple member states, reflecting a unified effort within the EU to lead in the field of quantum technology. By pooling resources and expertise, the project aims to position Europe at the forefront of the global quantum industry.
