UPDATE: A significant health alert has been issued as the Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirms that certain batches of Nestlé’s baby formula contain a dangerous toxin. Parents are urged to take immediate action following the recall of the SMA infant formula due to contamination with cereulide, a substance linked to nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.
Earlier this month, an urgent safety recall was announced for multiple SMA products after fears emerged regarding their safety. The contaminated ingredient, specifically arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, is typically added to formulas to support infant development. However, the FSA’s investigation revealed that the contamination originated from a shared, third-party supplier.
Jodie Wild, head of the FSA’s incidents unit, stated, “Ongoing investigations have identified that the contamination originated from a shared, third-party ingredient supplier. We are urgently tracing all products that may have used ingredients from this supplier to ensure any affected products are removed from sale.”
The specific SMA products included in the recall are:
– SMA Advanced First Infant Milk
– SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk
– SMA Anti Reflux
– SMA Alfamino
– SMA First Infant Milk
– SMA Little Steps First Infant Milk
– SMA Comfort
– SMA Lactose Free
Parents are strongly advised to stop using these products immediately and consult a healthcare professional if their baby has consumed any of the affected formulas. If the formula was prescribed, parents should talk to their pharmacist or doctor before switching to another product.
In a related concern, Danone also issued a recall on January 23 for a batch of Aptamil baby formula over similar cereulide contamination fears. The FSA confirmed that only one batch sold in the UK was affected, but additional batches distributed abroad may also pose a risk.
Wild emphasized, “Both recalls are due to the presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause vomiting and nausea. If further recalls are needed, we will announce them immediately.”
