URGENT UPDATE: Motorists in Devon and Cornwall are being warned to check road conditions immediately as a yellow weather warning is in effect due to substantial rainfall expected to continue until Friday morning. The Met Office has confirmed that heavy downpours will impact travel, following the devastation of Storm Chandra that has already caused significant flooding across the UK.
As of today, Thursday, October 26, 2023, residents in southwest England and Northern Ireland should brace for intense rainfall, particularly during the afternoon and evening. Chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert stated, “On Thursday, showers in southwest England will be replaced by a more organized area of rain when the next system reaches the south of Cornwall around lunchtime.”
Heavy rain is forecasted to begin around noon today, with the potential for 10 to 15 mm of rain across the region, and localized areas, especially near the south coast, facing up to 25 mm. This precipitation is expected to exacerbate existing flooding conditions from Storm Chandra, creating dangerous travel scenarios.
The Met Office highlighted that the rain could lead to transport disruptions and further flooding, advising residents to stay alert and modify travel plans as necessary. “Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit,” officials urged.
Residents are strongly encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions before traveling, as the weather warnings may change rapidly. The Met Office emphasized the importance of checking bus and train schedules and being ready to adapt plans based on the latest information.
