Community Opposes Major Solar Farm Plans in Thurstaston

Plans for a significant solar farm in Thurstaston, Merseyside, have sparked considerable opposition, drawing over 3,300 signatures on an online petition. The project, proposed by Chint Solar, part of the Chinese electronics manufacturer Chint Group Ltd, aims to develop a solar farm on green belt land covering a total of 27 hectares near Rose Cottage off Station Road.

The proposed site is located in an area noted for its scenic beauty and is described by local residents as having “the most fantastic view you could get.” In light of this, the Wirral Council has outlined a series of requirements that must be addressed in any forthcoming planning application. The response follows a request for guidance from Chint Solar regarding the necessary environmental assessments for the project.

Environmental and Community Concerns

Chint Solar’s plans are still in the early stages, with the solar farm expected to remain operational for a minimum of 35 years, potentially extending up to 40 years. The proposed development would extend north toward Thurstaston Hill and southwest to a nearby caravan park, raising concerns among local residents and officials alike.

The council’s requirements include an extensive review of the environmental impact, with a particular focus on how the project may affect local wildlife and heritage sites. This assessment will necessitate the collection of two years of survey data on bird populations, starting in March 2024, and evaluations of the project’s implications for key locations such as the Dee Estuary.

A spokesperson for Chint Solar stated that the initial studies conducted thus far are standard procedures aimed at determining the project’s feasibility. They emphasized a commitment to engaging with the local community, noting that a public consultation will be launched soon, along with a dedicated project website to provide transparent information and gather feedback.

Council’s Stance and Community Response

The reaction from local politicians has been mixed, with Conservative representatives vowing to oppose the project vigorously, while a Labour councillor characterized the proposal as “ludicrous.” The council has expressed intentions to collaborate with Flintshire Council, as the solar farm’s visibility will extend across the River Dee, potentially impacting communities in neighboring areas.

In its detailed response to Chint Solar, Wirral Council indicated that it will closely monitor the project’s design and layout to minimize any adverse effects on the historic environment. They specifically mentioned the importance of avoiding solar array placements on the highest, most visually exposed slopes.

A council report reiterates that it remains too early to determine whether the proposal will be acceptable, indicating that comprehensive information will be crucial for any future planning decisions. As the situation develops, the local community’s input will play a significant role in shaping the outcome of this contentious proposal.
