Ivan Vuković, a member of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) in Montenegro, has requested police intervention following threats made against him on social media. Vuković reported receiving aggressive messages, including derogatory terms such as “lupež” and “Ništa roba,” in response to his political activities.
In a statement shared on social media, Vuković expressed concern over the nature of these threats. He remarked, “I’m not quite sure what ‘Stasao za gepek’ means,” indicating his confusion over the violent implications of the phrase. This comment comes after he publicly acknowledged the recent closure of a chapter in Montenegro’s negotiations with the European Union, a significant political milestone.
Vuković emphasized the importance of security for public figures, urging law enforcement to take appropriate action. He stated, “I would be grateful if the police would respond,” reflecting a call for accountability in addressing threats against politicians in Montenegro.
The political climate in the country has become increasingly tense, particularly as discussions surrounding EU integration continue. Vuković’s experience highlights the challenges faced by politicians navigating social media, where hostility can escalate quickly.
As the situation develops, it remains critical for authorities to monitor and address threats to ensure the safety of public officials and maintain a civil political discourse.
