URGENT UPDATE: A new sculpture honoring the late Queen Elizabeth II is set to grace Birdcage Walk in central London as part of a national memorial. Acclaimed sculptor Karen Newman has been commissioned to create the tribute, which aims to capture the “strong and complex personality” of the beloved monarch.
Newman, known for her dynamic portrayals of historical figures, will design the sculpture to complement a larger statue of the Queen, created by Martin Jennings, which will overlook The Mall, just across from St James’s Park. This dual tribute will also include a statue of Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, positioned near Marlborough Gate, reflecting their lifelong partnership.
The Cabinet Office confirmed that the statue of Philip will now be placed in a prestigious location, enhancing the Queen’s memorial site. “It is a huge honour to be asked to contribute my work to the memorial for Queen Elizabeth II,” Newman stated. She emphasized her goal to portray the Queen both as “an icon and as an individual,” showcasing her multifaceted life.
Newman’s extensive experience includes crafting wax figures for Madame Tussauds, where she depicted notable figures like Stevie Wonder and former British prime ministers. Her bronze memorials, including those of WWII heroines Noor Inayat Khan and Violette Szabo, exemplify her ability to blend artistry with historical significance.
Jennings praised Newman’s appointment, stating, “Her work always has great presence, being both subtle and commanding in equal measure.” He confirmed that his statue of the Queen will depict her standing, in line with traditional representations of the House of Windsor.
The national memorial, designed by Lord Foster, will also feature a “family of gardens” throughout St James’s Park, alongside a new translucent glass bridge symbolizing unity. The final designs for the entire memorial are set to be unveiled in April 2024, coinciding with what would have been the Queen’s 100th birthday.
This development marks a significant step in honoring a monarch who played a pivotal role in British history, and it invites public anticipation for the unveiling of the memorial site. The artistic tribute is expected to resonate deeply with the public, reflecting the enduring legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.
