Bošnjačka Stranka Sets Conditions for DPS to Retain Local Power

Bošnjačka stranka (BS) has issued specific political and personnel demands to the Demokratska partija socijalista (DPS) as a condition for continuing its support of the current local government in Bijelo Polje. This development has emerged from multiple sources close to the negotiations, indicating rising tensions within the local political landscape.

The BS is seeking to assume key roles in the municipal administration and public institutions. Their demands include the position of the President of the Municipality, the role of Secretary of the Secretariat for Investments and Construction, and a directorship at the Agency for Spatial Planning. Additional requests involve the establishment of a new public institution and the appointment of a director for the JU “Avdo Međedović.” Furthermore, BS is pushing for the chairmanship of the board of directors for a sports club and the prioritization of the valuation process for the Hadži Danušina džamija, which they deem politically and identitatively significant.

Negotiations revolve around the Hadži Danušina džamija issue, viewed as a critical test of DPS’s willingness to accommodate BS’s demands fully. The BS has long expressed dissatisfaction with its share of power and influence within the coalition with DPS, contemplating withdrawal of support unless conditions are redefined.

Media reports indicate that BS’s coalition partners at the national level had previously urged the party to terminate its collaboration with DPS locally, including in Bijelo Polje. This pressure has reportedly intensified over time, particularly in light of changing political alliances following a shift in national governance.

The outcome of negotiations between BS and DPS is pivotal for the survival of the current local administration in Bijelo Polje. Should an agreement fail to materialize, sources do not rule out a potential restructuring of power or even the implementation of temporary measures leading to extraordinary local elections.

Negotiations are ongoing, with assessments suggesting that BS’s positions have become considerably firmer. The message to DPS is clear: without fulfilling the outlined conditions, the support for the existing local governance is in jeopardy. The political dynamics in Bijelo Polje could shift dramatically depending on how these discussions unfold in the coming days.
