Fitness Group Raises £500 for Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

A fitness group has successfully raised a total of £500 for Breast Cancer Now through a raffle held at the Holbeach Community Centre on December 29, 2023. Organized by Helen Lea, who runs Helen’s Zumba & Fitness classes in Holbeach, Gedney Hill, and Tilney All Saints, the event aimed to support a cause that has impacted many in the community.

Ms. Lea, a fitness instructor with over 17 years of experience, emphasized the significance of the fundraiser, stating, “Breast cancer affects so many people. A few ladies in my class have been affected by it. It is a worthy cause and everyone was very generous.” The raffle featured prizes donated by local businesses and community members, alongside cash contributions.

Helen’s annual fitness event, held between Christmas and New Year, supports various charities. In previous years, funds have been raised for organizations such as Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, Animals of Ukraine, Tapping House, and Macmillan Cancer Support. Ms. Lea expressed her satisfaction with the amount raised this year, highlighting the community’s commitment to charitable causes.

Community Engagement and Fitness Advocacy

Ms. Lea is known for her role in promoting fitness within the local community, being credited as one of the first instructors to introduce Zumba to Lincolnshire. Her involvement in organizing Zumba events during the 2012 Olympics when the Olympic torch visited Holbeach showcases her dedication to fostering physical activity.

“Physical exercise is so important not just for bodies and joints but for mental health. My motto for 2026 is to keep moving,” Ms. Lea remarked, underscoring the dual benefits of fitness. Her classes have developed a loyal following, and she encourages newcomers to join, even if they feel apprehensive about attending alone. “Everyone who comes to my class is lovely. It is for all ages and everyone is always happy when new people join. People have made lifelong friends at my classes.”

For those interested in trying out a class, Ms. Lea offers a half-price promotion for first-time attendees who mention “newspaper” when booking. Additional information can be found on the Helen’s Zumba & Fitness Facebook page.

The success of this fundraising event reflects not only the community’s spirit but also the importance of fitness in promoting both physical and mental well-being. As Ms. Lea continues her mission, she remains committed to supporting those affected by breast cancer and fostering a welcoming environment for all fitness enthusiasts.
