UPDATE: A house fire in Newry has led police to uncover a significant cannabis factory in Co Down. The blaze erupted on January 18, 2026, shortly before 4:30 PM on Thomas Street, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Four fire engines from Newry, Banbridge, and Warrenpoint rushed to the scene, where firefighters discovered the cannabis operation on the ground floor after extinguishing the flames. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, as the property was unoccupied during the incident.
“Officers attended the scene, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who extinguished the fire and advised police there was a substantial amount of cannabis and associated paraphernalia within the property,” said Inspector Walker.
As firefighters managed the situation, some nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. Authorities confirmed that the fire is not being treated as suspicious, and ongoing inquiries are underway.
