Newbury to Honor Alphonse Cary with 21st Blue Plaque

Newbury will unveil its 21st blue plaque on January 23, 2024, to commemorate the contributions of Alphonse Cary to the town’s musical heritage. The ceremony will take place at 11:00 AM at the corner of 47 Northbrook Street, where Cary constructed a building in 1882. The unveiling will be officiated by the mayor of Newbury, David Harman, and marks a significant recognition of Cary’s impact on local culture.

Cary played a pivotal role in Newbury’s burgeoning interest in music between 1871 and 1901. He was instrumental in supplying instruments, sheet music, and tuning services to the community, fostering a growing appreciation for music in households across the town. His contributions extended beyond commerce; Cary actively participated in the local cultural scene as both a performer and musician.

The business established by Cary continued to thrive after his passing, with his son taking over operations in 1901. It remained a vital part of Newbury until its closure in 1964. The new plaque will join others throughout Newbury that recognize notable figures such as Francis Baily and Thomas Hardy, further enriching the town’s historical narrative.

Residents and visitors interested in learning more about Newbury’s blue plaques can find additional information on the town council’s website. This initiative not only celebrates individual achievements but also enhances the cultural landscape of the community, inviting reflection on its rich musical history.
