Alexandre Pantoja Avoids Surgery, Eyes Return After Injury

Former UFC champion Alexandre Pantoja has received encouraging news regarding his recent injury sustained during UFC 323. After suffering a dislocated elbow in a title fight against Joshua Van on December 9, 2023, Pantoja will not require surgery, significantly improving his chances of a swift return to the octagon.

In the opening moments of their championship bout, Pantoja attempted a head kick that Van effectively countered. As Pantoja fell to the canvas, he tried to brace his fall with his left arm, resulting in a severe injury that led many to speculate on a lengthy recovery period. The injury was initially thought to necessitate extensive time off, raising concerns among fans and analysts alike about his future in the sport.

Recent updates, however, have painted a more optimistic picture. Esteemed MMA journalist Ariel Helwani reported during the 2025 MMA Awards show that Pantoja’s medical team confirmed he will not need surgery. Helwani noted that while the injury affected the tendons in Pantoja’s arm, there were no fractures or damage to ligaments. This development suggests that the former champion could return as early as mid to late 2026.

Pantoja has already begun training again, posting footage of himself sparring without any cast or support on his arm. Fans expressed their surprise and excitement on social media, with one user commenting, “That’s great for him and honestly surprising. I thought he’d for sure need surgery.” Another fan remarked, “Lucky guy,” highlighting the unexpected nature of his recovery.

Before his title fight with Van, Pantoja had a successful run as the UFC flyweight champion, having captured the title by defeating Brandon Moreno in July 2023. He defended his championship four times, solidifying his status in the division. Following his victory over Pantoja, Van became the second-youngest champion in UFC history and the first born in the 2000s to earn a title.

Van has expressed a willingness to grant Pantoja a rematch, should the former champion recover fully from his injury. However, Van is expected to face a top contender in the flyweight division, such as Manel Kape or Tatsuro Taira, before any potential rematch can take place.

As Pantoja looks ahead to his recovery, the MMA community remains hopeful for his return to the sport. His resilience and determination will be crucial as he navigates this challenging period in his career.
