Over 100 Christmas Meals Served to Combat Loneliness in Newbury

UPDATE: More than 100 meals were served in Newbury on Christmas Day to combat loneliness among local residents. The annual initiative, organized by Christians Together in the Newbury Area, provided a warm meal and companionship to those who would have otherwise celebrated the holiday alone.

This heartwarming event, now in its eighth year, was spearheaded by Pastors Sam and Joanna Abraham of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus Disciples Centre. With the help of 60 volunteers, including families and young people, the team prepared 102 meals, ensuring that no one in the community was left without festive cheer.

In a remarkable show of community spirit, 24 meals were delivered to housebound and unwell individuals, while volunteer drivers collected guests from their homes. Attendees enjoyed entertainment, a full Christmas meal, and refreshments throughout the day, plus goodie bags to take home.

The event was further supported by generous donations from local organizations, including Newbury Lions Club, Jones Robinson, Fizz Hire, and Deborah Puxley, who has provided the Christmas tree for the occasion each year.

During the festivities, Andy How from Glendale Church delivered the Christmas message, while Newbury mayor David Herman and mayoress Rosalind Herman rolled up their sleeves to wash 200 plates and 100 cups throughout the day. The chairman of West Berkshire Council, Dr. Tony Vickers, also made an appearance alongside his wife, Martha, to lend support.

This initiative not only highlights the importance of community but also addresses the emotional impact of loneliness during the holiday season. Organizers emphasized the significance of bringing people together and ensuring that everyone feels valued and connected, especially during a time typically filled with family and friends.

As the day concluded, participants left not only with a delicious meal but also with a sense of belonging and support. The success of this event lays the foundation for future gatherings, encouraging further participation and donations to continue combating loneliness in the community.

The community’s commitment to supporting its members shines brightly this holiday season, reminding all of us of the power of kindness and compassion.
