URGENT UPDATE: SoCo Creamery, a beloved ice cream shop in Great Barrington, is officially under new ownership as of December 19, 2023. Matt Scott, a lifelong ice cream enthusiast and former director at SoCo, has taken the reins from Erik Bruun, who owned the business since 2015.
Scott, who has a rich background in the ice cream industry, revealed his plans in an interview with The Berkshire Edge. “Everything aligned perfectly,” he stated, emphasizing his passion for ice cream and community. Having previously worked at SoCo from 2009 to 2017, he brings a wealth of experience, including stints at Ample Hills Creamery and Dutchess Creamery.
The new owner plans to maintain SoCo’s core operations while introducing vibrant new packaging and upgraded equipment. “We have a lot of old equipment and old signage,” Scott noted. “I want to improve the consumer experience and give our scoopers better tools.” To facilitate these upgrades, the store will temporarily close for a few weeks this winter.
Scott’s commitment to quality is evident as he focuses on enhancing SoCo’s legacy rather than overhauling it. “There are very few people who have negative feelings about ice cream,” he expressed. “Ice cream is strictly for enjoyment. It’s a social thing.” His vision includes working closely with local suppliers and maintaining the community’s connection to the store.
Additionally, Scott will continue to run his consulting business, Optimal Ice Cream, which assists smaller ice cream operations in scaling their manufacturing capabilities. This dual role emphasizes his dedication to both SoCo and the broader ice cream community.
Scott’s family life also played a significant role in his decision to return to Berkshire County after living in Brooklyn. He and his wife, Caitlin, along with their two children, sought a more manageable lifestyle. “Living in a 900-square-foot apartment with four people and a dog became overwhelming,” he explained.
As Scott steps into his new role, the community eagerly anticipates improvements while cherishing the beloved traditions of SoCo. With a focus on quality and community, Scott aims to keep the spirit of this cherished local business alive.
