Plans to expand Welsh-medium education in Cardiff have received official approval from council members. The decision will enable the establishment of a new nursery facility at Ysgol Gymraeg Coed-Y-Gof, located in Pentrebane. This initiative is set to broaden the age range for students from four to eleven years old, now including children aged three to eleven.
The nursery unit will provide 24 part-time places, with additional resources allocated for the young learners. Funding for these resources will be sourced from the school’s Governing Body. Council cabinet members approved the proposal during a meeting held in December 2025, and it is expected to commence in the school year starting in September 2026.
Before this approval, an initial proposal had been presented in September. The council conducted a review to address any potential objections, but a report indicated that no concerns were raised regarding the plans. The document highlighted that establishing a nursery class would significantly bolster the growth of Welsh-medium education, aligning with Cardiff’s Bilingual Cardiff 5-year Strategy and the 10-year Welsh in Education Strategic Plan (WESP).
Cardiff Council Leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, expressed his enthusiasm for the development. He remarked, “It is good news and I for one am delighted that we’re moving forward with the nursery provision on this site.” The proposal received unanimous support from all council members present.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance educational offerings within the region and ensure that children from diverse backgrounds have access to quality education. The council anticipates that this move will positively influence educational standards across the board.
In a related discussion, council members also addressed the future of a council-run horse riding school, which may soon be put out to tender for alternative management. Further updates on this subject will be available in upcoming reports.
