Female Triathlete’s Body Found After Suspected Shark Attack

UPDATE: The body of Erica Fox, a 55-year-old triathlete, has been recovered from the waters off Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz after she was reported missing following a suspected shark attack. The grim discovery was made around 2 PM on Saturday, December 28, 2025, as confirmed by her father, James Fox.

Authorities report that Fox vanished on December 21 while swimming with her fellow members of the Kelp Krawlers swim club at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Witnesses described a horrifying scene as a shark allegedly mauled her. The distance from Lovers Point to Davenport Beach is approximately 30 miles, highlighting the extensive search efforts that unfolded.

Confirming the recovery, Sergeant Ryan Farotte of the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office stated that while the body has been identified by Fox’s family, official identification is still ongoing. Search teams from both the Santa Cruz and Monterey County sheriff’s offices, alongside the US Coast Guard, conducted extensive operations following her disappearance, which included boats, helicopters, and divers.

Fox was swimming with a group of 15 when the incident occurred. Reports indicate that a driver near the area alerted the Coast Guard after witnessing a shark breach the surface, allegedly with a human body in its mouth. This shocking revelation prompted immediate action, with swimmers rushing back to shore, only to discover Fox was missing.

First responders initiated an urgent search operation that lasted for approximately 15 hours before it was officially called off. However, independent search groups, including Bedrock Ocean Exploration and the Angel’s Recovery Dive Team, continued their efforts. On Saturday, Cal Fire used a specialized rope system to recover Fox’s body from the water.

Known for her adventurous spirit, Fox was a seasoned competitor, having participated in two half-Ironman competitions and the iconic Escape from Alcatraz triathlon for nearly two decades. Members of the Kelp Krawlers described her as a “cheerful” and “kind” individual who understood the risks associated with ocean swimming. Tragically, she had attended a seminar on sharks just weeks prior to her death, emphasizing her awareness of ocean safety.

Her husband of 30 years, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, was among those who witnessed the chaos unfold on that fateful day. Fellow swimmers expressed their shock and heartbreak, recalling the moments leading up to Fox’s disappearance. “It started to click that everybody was back on shore but Erica,” said Sharon Carey, a member of the swim group.

The community of Pacific Grove is in mourning, with local officials, including Mayor Nick Smith, extending their condolences. “When a tragedy like this occurs in a small town, it is deeply felt throughout our entire community,” he stated.

As memories of Fox continue to resonate within her community, her fellow swimmers and family members are left reflecting on her vibrant life. “She lived her life fully,” said Vanreusel, highlighting the deep impact Fox had on those around her.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present in our oceans. As investigations continue, officials urge swimmers and beachgoers to remain vigilant and informed about marine life in the area. The community is coming together to honor Fox’s legacy, ensuring her spirit remains a guiding light for future swimmers.
