URGENT UPDATE: Football clubs across Wrexham and Wales are being strongly encouraged to enroll in a free online mental health training course, aimed at equipping coaches with vital skills to support players. The initiative, launched by Mind Cymru and UK Coaching, seeks to foster positive sporting environments and enhance understanding of mental health issues.
As of now, approximately 200 football clubs in Wales have completed this essential e-learning course. However, many more spots are still available, making it crucial that clubs take immediate action. Minister for Sports, Jack Sargeant, emphasized the importance of this training, stating, “From my own involvement with football clubs in Deeside, I know that they are the heart of our communities and coaches are often the first to notice when someone is struggling.”
With the holiday season approaching, Sargeant highlighted that this period can be particularly tough for some individuals. “The practical skills coaches gain from this course can be lifesaving,” he added. “I’m urging clubs across Wales to seize this opportunity because it can significantly impact people’s lives.”
Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sarah Murphy, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Football clubs are trusted spaces in our communities where people of all ages come together. When coaches understand mental health and feel confident having those conversations, it creates an environment where people feel safe to open up.”
Murphy also pointed out that this training is a vital step in breaking down stigma surrounding mental health issues, ensuring that no one faces these challenges alone. She appealed to all clubs to take advantage of this opportunity, emphasizing its critical importance.
Sport Wales is actively working on a long-term strategy to combat stigma and promote positive mental health within the sports sector. Clubs interested in participating in the free course can contact the Football Association of Wales for registration details.
For immediate mental health support, individuals can reach out to the 24-hour CALL Helpline at 0800 132 737, or contact NHS 111 and press 2 for urgent assistance. The Samaritans are also available at 116 123, with a Welsh-language helpline accessible from 7 PM to 11 PM at 0808 164 0123.
Share this vital information NOW to help ensure that football clubs across Wales prioritize mental health training and create supportive environments for all players.
