A woman from Carmarthenshire has successfully raised £2,620 for the maternity bereavement room at Glangwili Hospital by completing the Three Peaks Challenge. Kimberley Davies, accompanied by her close friend Carrie, scaled the heights of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Yr Wyddfa in September 2025. This feat took on special significance for Kimberley, as it coincided with what would have been the due date for her twin daughters, Sophie and Lara, who tragically passed away in June.
The challenge unfolded over three days, culminating in a hike up Yr Wyddfa, where they were joined by 30 family members and friends, ranging in age from eight to 81. Kimberley recounted the difficulties faced during their journey, particularly adverse weather conditions. “It was very challenging due to the weather, as we had a yellow weather warning for wind and rain on each of the mountains,” she explained.
On Ben Nevis, temperatures dropped to minus one degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong winds. The ascent felt endless, while Scafell Pike proved slippery due to heavy rain, making river crossings perilous. The final climb on Yr Wyddfa was marked by poor visibility and relentless rain. Despite these hardships, Kimberley felt a profound emotional connection throughout the climb, noting, “It was a very emotional walk seeing the number of people wanting to climb in memory of Sophie and Lara.”
In undertaking this challenge, Kimberley aimed not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness about the experience of baby loss. “I want to raise awareness of the negative outcomes in pregnancy, as many experience the loss of their babies, but sadly it’s not spoken about,” she stated. After losing her daughters due to Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, Kimberley sought a positive focus during her grieving process.
The funds raised will provide enhancements to the bereavement room, allowing for the purchase of items that exceed NHS core funding. “The support I received from the medical team in the ‘Pili Pala’ bereavement room on the labour ward was phenomenal,” Kimberley remarked. “Such compassionate staff should be proud of the job they do; they made such a terrible time in my life a little easier, thanks to everyone’s kindness.”
Kimberley expressed her gratitude towards those who contributed. “I wanted to show my gratitude and give something back as a thank you,” she said. “I hope the money raised will go towards improving the facilities in the Pili Pala room and benefit other families facing similar losses.”
Midwife Anwen Evans acknowledged Kimberley’s efforts, stating, “At the maternity unit, we are extremely thankful to Kim, her family and friends for taking on the incredible challenge of the Three Peaks to raise funds for the maternity bereavement room, especially so soon after Kim’s heartbreaking loss of her twin girls.” Evans praised the courage and determination exhibited during the challenge, emphasizing the impact the funds will have on families in crisis.
The Three Peaks Challenge stands as a testament to resilience and community support, illustrating how personal loss can inspire collective action for the benefit of others.
