URGENT UPDATE: The Tally Ho, the only pub in Winchburgh, West Lothian, has officially reopened its doors following an eight-month closure. Local couple Craig and Claire Smalley welcomed their first customers on December 11, marking a significant revival in village life after the pub stood empty since April.
This historic establishment has been a cornerstone of the community for over 100 years, albeit under different names. The Smalleys, who are taking their first steps into the pub business, are excited to transform the Tally Ho into a vibrant local hub amid ongoing developments in the area.
With 15 years of hospitality experience, Craig Smalley, 33, is optimistic about the pub’s future. He highlighted the potential in Winchburgh, where hundreds of new homes are being constructed. “There’s no hiding that the opportunity in Winchburgh is huge,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to creating a welcoming environment that would draw locals and newcomers alike.
In a direct response to the challenges faced by the hospitality industry, Craig shared, “It was important to keep the belief that there are successful pubs out there.” He believes that even in a competitive market, with dedication and quality, the Tally Ho can thrive.
The couple’s reopening was preceded by a soft launch that attracted a remarkable turnout. They expressed gratitude for the community’s support on social media, while also acknowledging the areas where they could improve. “We’ve said from day one, we will make mistakes, but we will go into the next day aiming to be better,” they noted.
The Tally Ho aims to bridge the gap between long-standing residents and new arrivals. Craig stated, “I want this place to be a hub in the heart of the village,” highlighting the importance of relationships in fostering community spirit. With a growing population, he hopes to attract both original villagers and newcomers eager to experience local culture.
In a light-hearted moment, Craig mentioned their two children, ages nine and five, with a smile: “My eldest is honestly the best PR tool we could have. She’s told every person she can about us opening.”
The reopening of the Tally Ho is not just a business venture; it’s a revitalization of community life in Winchburgh. As Craig and Claire embark on this exciting journey, the couple is determined to make the Tally Ho a beloved destination for all.
