DNP Advances Efforts for Dual Citizenship and Serbian Language Status

The Democratic People’s Party (DNP) has unanimously decided to intensify efforts regarding the status of the Serbian language and the issue of dual citizenship. This resolution was passed during a meeting of the party’s presidency held today, as outlined in an official statement released by the DNP.

The party’s leadership emphasized the need to amend the existing Citizenship Law to facilitate these changes. This initiative has been supported by prominent party figures, including Milun Zogović, the Vice President of the DNP, and members of parliament Jelena Kljajević and Dragan Bojović. They highlighted the necessity of initiating a national dialogue on these critical issues in the first quarter of 2024.

According to the DNP, constitutional amendments are not a threat to the state but rather a vital step towards stabilizing the socio-political landscape in light of forthcoming European challenges. The party believes that the government should first propose and adopt these constitutional changes to ensure that such decisions are supported at the institutional level and subsequently approved by the Assembly.

In their statement, the DNP called for all key political stakeholders to move beyond verbal commitments and demonstrate concrete actions. They stressed the importance of taking responsibility to halt further discrimination against the linguistic majority. The DNP reaffirmed its commitment to contributing fully to this cause, aligned with its publicly stated ideological and political goals.

As discussions around these topics gain momentum, the DNP’s proactive stance indicates a significant shift in the political climate surrounding citizenship and language rights in the region. The party’s leadership is poised to advocate for policies that they believe will enhance inclusivity and promote social cohesion.
