BREAKING: Jeffrey Deitch’s highly anticipated Miami exhibition, That Was Then, This Is Now, has just opened, showcasing the freshest talents in contemporary art. Running through January 2, 2026, this dynamic showcase is capturing the attention of art enthusiasts and collectors alike.
Located at 119 NE 41 Street in the vibrant Miami Design District, the exhibition features an impressive collection of works from 25 emerging artists under the age of 35. Curator William Croghan, who co-leads American Art Projects with Benno Tubbesing, describes this group as “the most special and important young group of artists working today.” The buzz around the event has been palpable, with excitement building even during flights to Florida.
This year’s showcase includes talents such as Matt McCormick, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Hannah Taurins, Mario Ayala, and Zoe Blue M, many of whom previously participated in a successful exhibition in Berlin earlier this year. The fusion of painting, sculpture, fashion, and furniture presents a multifaceted view of contemporary artistic expression.
Beyond the art, the exhibition is designed to be accessible to young collectors, featuring a curated selection of books, garments, and smaller editions from participating artists. The initiative aims to foster a new generation of collectors, making art ownership attainable and engaging.
The idea for this exhibition was conceived at the Art Basel 2024 fair in Switzerland, where Croghan and Tubbesing collaborated with Sam Robins, son of Design District developer Craig Robins. Following the success of America Unframed, Deitch entrusted American Art Projects with the organization of this Miami showcase.
As noted by renowned curator Hans Ulrich Obrist at the opening, the event marks a pivotal moment in American visual culture, showcasing the strong community among the artists. “These artists are in strong community with one another. That’s just how these guys move,” Croghan emphasized. He believes this group signifies a vital movement within the contemporary art landscape.
The exhibition is now open and promises to be a must-see for anyone passionate about art and innovation. Don’t miss your chance to experience what Croghan describes as “one of those next important movements” in the art world.
