Northern Unveils Plans for Up to 450 New Trains in Urgent Move

UPDATE: Northern has just announced a groundbreaking step in modernizing its rail services by issuing a request for tender for up to 450 new trains. This significant milestone was revealed during the Modern Railways Public Transport in the North Fourth Friday Club event in Manchester on 3 December.

Tricia Williams, Managing Director of Northern, confirmed the development, stating: “We went through the business case gateway with the Department [for Transport], and we’ve been able to issue a final tender or request for tender.” This announcement signals a major commitment to enhancing the train fleet, which is critical for improving regional transport.

The new fleet will comprise a mix of electric and multi-modal trains, designed to operate initially in diesel mode but with the flexibility to transition to electric or battery-powered systems. Northern aims to replace its oldest units, ensuring they meet modern standards and environmental expectations. Williams added that there will also be a small fleet of battery-powered models as part of their strategy.

This move is expected to significantly impact train travel in the region, providing passengers with more efficient and sustainable options. The introduction of the new trains is not just about replacing old units; it’s about enhancing the overall travel experience for commuters and supporting the shift towards greener transportation solutions.

The announcement follows earlier reports confirming that Northern’s new Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) will include the Class 382s, which are designed to meet the evolving demands of rail passengers.

As Northern progresses with this procurement, industry experts and commuters alike will be closely watching the developments. The next steps include finalizing partnerships with manufacturers and establishing timelines for the rollout of the new fleet.
